Meidell adds all-electric tube bending to its metalworking machinery range

Oslo, Norway, February 11, 2009 --- The metalworking machinery and tool specialist P Meidell AS has added all-electric tube bending machinery to its range. The new machinery is supplied by Unison, the leading innovator in this market and the first company to build an all-electric, servomotor-controlled tube bender.

"All-electric tube benders are now taking a larger and larger share of the market from traditional hydraulic powered equipment. This is because of a combination of advantages, including precision bending, deskilled machine set-up, reduced scrap, almost silent operation, and very significant energy savings" says Meidell's sales engineer Bjorn Garvik. "I am delighted to have secured the Unison franchise for Norway, as this company has a genuine reputation for innovation, and regularly wins orders for some of the most challenging tube bending applications in the world."

All-electric actuation provides significant advantages to manufacturers. Each of the tools employed during bending is under software control — allowing users to create smooth and accurate bends. Once the machine is set up, operating parameters can also be stored, allowing machines to be reconfigured for another part or batch in a few minutes, without creating any scrap. Further, as the actuation elements of the machine only need energy when a bend is being made, total power consumption is greatly reduced.

Over the past decade, Unison has consistently pushed the boundaries of the technology: among its latest advances are a laser measurement system that dynamically measures the accuracy of bend angles and automatically compensates for any errors, and all-electric machines capable of bending tube diameters of up to 150 mm including advanced exotic alloys.

Unison chose Meidell as its agent because of the company's detailed knowledge of Norway's metalworking manufacturing base, and because of its long experience with related automation including sheet metal machinery and machine tools.

Unison makes a wide range of tube bending machines for handling tubing diameters from 10 to 150 mm and beyond. Applications involving small batch sizes, expensive exotic materials, and high bending precision are key markets for its machines, and Unison has a significant track record in many key tube bending markets of relevance including shipbuilding and aerospace manufacturing.
