Julian Kidger (Joint Managing Director) Julian qualified as a chartered accountant in 1993 while at Robson Rhodes, a leading accountancy practice in the UK. He moved from the public practice into the commercial sector in 1995, taking up the position of Finance Director for a London-based television production, live theatre, promotions and agency business Qdos Entertainment Plc. Over the next ten years, the company expanded into one of the largest broad-based light entertainment and leisure businesses in the UK. In 2006 he led the MBO of Propaganda, a top 25 UK brand and marketing agency and was appointed Managing Director in 2008. Julian joined Unison in 2009 as NED and helped drive the commercial and brand strategy of Unison Ltd. Julian’s specialist areas include fundraising, mergers and acquisitions and Julian has carried out numerous NED and consultancy roles across a number of industry sectors.

Alan Pickering (Joint Managing Director) Alan Pickering, son of Unison’s founder, graduated with a Computer Science degree in 1988 and has developed control systems for multinationals, such as ICI and companies in the petrochemical distribution systems. With a wealth of experience in innovation and developing machine and control system solutions for challenging applications, Alan was responsible for developing the controls for the world’s first ‘all-electric’ tube bending machine. One of his passions is Education and trying to ensure children get inspiration from the real world to consider Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths as a career. Alongside his fellow director, Peter Wilkinson, they founded Scarborough Engineering Week (SEW) in 2010 and have inspired over 20,000 children, involving over 50 companies and education establishments in the region. Through SEW, Alan was co-founder of Scarborough University Technical College, a specialist engineering academy and new build school for children aged 14-18 which opened in September 2016. Alan also works closely with the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) as Chairman of the Education and Training committee to help close the skills gap that the industry faces. Alan leads the technical side of the business at Unison with a focus on organic product development as well as true R&D, with a keen eye on solving customer problems he has lead a number of complex automation projects as well as innovative Software Solutions with a focus on Industry 4.0.


Peter J Wilkinson (Non Executive Director) Peter is a very experienced and qualified marketing professional and an executive member of the Marketing Society (retired). He started his career as a Graduate with Mars Incorporated, then subsequently became a Senior Vice President of marketing with several leading global brands, including president of Pindar USA Inc and Alphagraphics. Over a ten-year period these subsidiaries became a $40 million turnover business, he is also a Non-Executive Director of two UK based companies and he is an immediate past chairman of HRH Prince Charles’ Princes Trust (North Yorkshire). Peter is also chairman of The Scarborough Business Ambassadors Ltd and has also worked in partnership with UKTI on several significant projects, ensuring that Scarborough-based companies are promoted on the ‘world stage’. He joined the Unison Ltd board as a Non-Executive Director and is responsible for brand and marketing strategy.

Terry Pickering (Founder) With a degree in Maths, Physics and Statistics, Terry spent his formative business years travelling the world as a missile guidance specialist for Ferranti working on the Bloodhound project and anti submarine warfare simulators. Founding the company in 1973 Terry continued to develop control systems for various equipment including the 1st CNC control systems for Addison’s and Langbow’s. After being released from contracts Terry assembled a team in 1991 to develop his own range of pioneering tube bending machines and the company continued to bring new and innovative products to market every year.

Scarborough Business Ambassadors Ltd Peter J Wilkinson and Alan Pickering are the driving force behind two vital projects, which will impact on Scarborough’s economic future. Scarborough Engineering Week and Scarborough UTC, a university technical college, which opened in September 2016 & provides career paths in ‘twenty first century engineering & manufacturing’ Peter is Chairman of the board of Trustees.
