When producing bends that require a Wiper Die it will add an additional collision point for the carriage.
This means that the collet has to hold further back from C/L before the last bend, unlike the Pressure Die, where you can do a Pressure Die Interference Move, the wiper is typically fixed.
This is predominately as it is very delicate and hard to set up.
If the last straight needs to take the carriage into the Wiper Die area, a Swing Away Wiper might work, however because it pivots around the centre-line of the tool post and typically only moves to about 45 degrees, you are not going to be able to achieve the full distance.
You also need to factor in the difficulty of bend. If a Wiper Die Tie Bar is required then this needs to be released before the Wiper can swing out of the wiper. This means the Tie Bar needs to be much more sophisticated.
At Unison, we have created a unique Dynamic Tie Bar which automatically deactivates to allow the Wiper to swing out of the way and reactivates when the Wiper is back in position.
The overriding principle in deciding if you need a machine with a Swing Away Wiper is cost saving. Is your material very expensive? Is the cost of a secondary trim operation expensive?
You then have to factor in the cost of the time taken to perform this operation as part of the bend sequence, as it will add time and then balance it out – it’s certainly not a standard feature on most machines in the market.
